VG-. Lacks several leaves (including preliminaries and all title pages); slight wear to extremities (chiefly to head of spine, spine edges and corners); slight scuffing and rubbing to covers (leather over cloth; chiefly to top edge of upper cover); some internal browning and/or foxing (chiefly to endpapers and edges). 251, [4], 6-116, 9, [2], 4-242 pages. Single-volume rebinding of 3 popular English novels of the late 19th century (originally published in Great Britain in 1877, 1887 and 1883, respectively) in later American issues; date is conjectural (no date in any of the parts). Includes 9-page publisher's list of 'Some Popular Novels' (following text of 'By the Gate of the Sea') and additional publisher's advertisement for the periodical 'Harper's Young People: An Illustrated Weekly'; also notable for the uncredited illustrations preceding 'A Woman-Hater'. 3 volumes, bound as 1; in 3/4 black calf over dark purple cloth, gilt-stamped and decorated spine, covers ruled blind, plain endpapers, all edges trimmed. Interesting bit of American Victoriana in still fairly decent condition, externally and internally.2 B/w Illustrations; Advertising Matter.
