First Edition. 8 x 11.5 in. [12] + 292pp. + [8] page index; engraved frontispiece. Rebacked quarter leather over the original contemporary calf boards paneled in blind; new red leather spine label stamped in gilt, and new endpapers. Boards worn at the corners, and moderate dampstaining along the fore-edges (but doesn’t affect the text). Overall a Very Good copy. // The text reflects a critical view of the House of Stuart and figures like Sir Francis Bacon, rather than praising the monarchy.
