From the library of noted American publisher and businessman William S. Loomis (founded the Holyoke Street Railway Company. He soon had a street railway line operating in Elmwood as well, and not long after organized the Mt. Tom Railway Company) with his name and date to the top of the ffep; attached to the front pastedown is a 3 panel Als from the author Eben Loomis, noting the address of the Nautical Almanac Office in Washington DC; and addressed to William Loomis February 14, 1896; the letter discusses that Eben Loomis was working on his second book (to be published later that year (1896) titled “An Eclipse Party in Africa”) and then comments on William Loomis and the Mt. Tom Railway. William Loomis has also added genealogical information on the title page, on the rear endpaper is a brief list of the Descendants of Joseph Loomis in America. First Edition of the author’s first book. 4.75 x 7 in. 188pp. Original green decorated cloth with titles stamped in gilt and floral motif on rear, spine and front board stamped in dark green and brown. Moderate rubbing to the spine tips and a portion of the floral decoration, light soiling to the cloth in places, else a Very Good copy; interior is clean, binding in solid. // Eben Jenks Loomis and his wife Mary were personal friends and correspondents of Emily Dickinson late in her life, notably receiving a letter in January 1885. He was an astronomer and naturalist, and his daughter Mabel Loomis Todd, later became famous as the editor who first published Emily Dickinson's poetry.
