Attractively bound in period 3/4 polished brown calf, spines with raised bands, contrasting red and black morocco labels, and ornate gilt floral tooling, marbled edges and endpapers (volumes have some rubbing and a few nicks to spine tips; some foxing; Volume X has some staining to boards and text). Has a superb shelf presence, measuring nearly three feet. Noted abridgement, edited by Thomas Hart Benton, of the debates of Congress from the First Congress (1789) through the 35th Congress (1856), based on Gales and Seaton's 'Annals of Congress', their 'Register of Debates in Congress,' and the official reports by John C. Rives. Issued during the period of tension right before the Civil War, reproducing the texts of many notable speeches and debates pertinent to the underlying issues.
