Lady Chatterley's Lover

Privately Printed, 1928. First Thus. Hardcover. Good / No Jacket. Item #620954

A good copy in period burgundy textured cloth titled in gilt (light reading wear; gilt titling oxidyzed; some rippling to text;; slight internal uniform browning, chiefly to edges). 307 pages. Early pirated issue of the author's most infamous novel, concerning a married woman's affair with a gamekeeper (supposedly inspired by Lady Ottoline Morell's dalliance with a stonemason nicknamed 'Tiger' -- hmmm). The imprint is undoubtedly bogus (to reflect that of the true first edition); issued probably within the first 2 years of the actual publication. Notable mainly for the compactness of the text (the original has 368 numbered pages, as opposed to 307), and for the title page illustration (of a devilish sort of nude male figure bearing a flask and a spoon) in a style somewhat of a cross between Eric Gill and Arthur Szyk. Not referenced in Roberts/Poplawski. .1 b/w Illustration (title page); Few b/w Decorations (headpieces).
