First single-volume issue of the most influential work on book choice in the English-speaking world in the 19th century; includes the original (first edition) preface, an extensive index, and an advertisement for the fourth edition of Dibdin's "An Introduction to the Knowledge of Rare and Valuable Editions of the Greek and Latin Classics" at rear (dated June 1, 1825). Printed by W. Nicol at the Shakespeare Press. Originally published in 2 volumes, 1824 (see BMC, volume 7, page 253, column 177). Bound in 3/4 dark maroon morocco over matching pebbled cloth, spine stamped gilt and ruled blind, covers double-ruled blind, tan endpapers, top edges stained dark brown, remaining edges trimmed and stained lighter brown. Provenance: 1) Bookplate of the Reverend D. Wood, of Harrow School, on front attached endpaper; 2) Bookplate of the noted bibliophile Gavin D. R. Bridson on front attached endpaper (plus his holograph signature above Wood bookplate, same location). Additional ALS (unidentified holograph, not dated, signed "W. W.") with 4-line pencil annotation at head (also in unidentified holograph) tipped-on front free endpaper. Solid and tight enough copy internally, with an exceptional provenance.
