Bound in publishers's polished brown calf over dark green cloth boards, gilt coat of arms on front covers, spines with gilt titling and gilt-ruled compartments (slight wear along edges of covers, some corners slightly bumped, minor rubbing to spines on two volumes). Macaulay (1800-1859), English author, essayist, historian and statesman. Macaulay's essays are a model of English prose, and offer incisive commentary upon diverse themes. PROVENANCE: Each volume has engraved armorial bookplate of Edward Bell; some volumes have bookplate of his son Edward Bell, Jr.; each volume has faint ink inscription noting that the set was a gift from 'Grandma Bell' .B/w Illustrations & Engraving.
