Lacks 1 hand-colored plate and 1 uncolored plate, plus title page and preliminaries; slight rubbing and browning to covers (leather over boards; chiefly to edges); ex-library markings (chiefly to spine and rear attached endpaper; latter with printed paper bookplate); slight internal browning (chiefly to edges and endpapers; generally unaffecting images). [11] leaves, [4] pages at rear + plates. Title supplied (from Tooley); imperfect copy, lacking the first (uncolored) plate of 'Kings Coll[ege] Chapel, the Public Library & Senate House, Cambridge' and the last (colored) plate 'A Member of the University in the Volunteer Uniform', as well as the engraved title page proper, preliminary leaves and 1 page (i.e. leaf) of text (which accompanied the last color plate). Remainder of the plates and texts present (in somewhat shuffled order), including 14 plates of costumes and 2 depicting gold medals (the Duke of Grafton's and Sir William Browne's). Tooley #246; see BMC, volume 11, page 757, column 308 (which attributes the work to 'Harraden, R. B.' (i.e. Richard Bankes Harraden) and gives the title as 'Costume of the Various Orders in the University ... Drawn by R. Harraden'; date given as 1803-05, with 2 copies listed (1 imperfect) with similar pagination); one of an unspecified number of copies, published in January of 1805 (a second edition followed in 1822). Bound in modern (early 20th century) dark green morocco over gray marbled boards, light green marbled endpapers, a.e.g. Notable for the 2 leaves (printed recto/verso) of the subscriber's list, bound in at rear (not mentioned either in Tooley or in the BMC records); external page size measures 11 3/8 inches high and 8 7/8 inches wide. Extremely rare in any edition and/or condition.
