Spine perished (with most of binder removed); wear to extremities (chiefly to corners and edges, with most of the original leather worn away); stains, slight rubbing to covers (leather over boards; chiefly to edges); upper cover mostly detached, with lower cover starting at inner hinge; previous owners' ink signatures on front free endpaper; previous bookseller's printed paper label on rear attached endpaper; few previous owner's pencil annotations (chiefly marginal); slight internal uniform browning and/or foxing (chiefly to edges, endpapers and preliminaries). [2], viii, 184 pages. 'Antiquities' relating mainly to the ancient Welsh (Cymry), as per the title page: 'Comprehending, I. A concise history of the Lords Marchers; their origin, power, and conquests in Wales. II. The arms of the ancient nobility and gentry of North-Wales. III. A Letter of Dr. Lloyd, Bishop of St. Asaph's, concerning Jeffrey of Monmouth's History. IV. An Account of the Discovery of America, by the Welsh, more than 300 years before the voyage of Columbus. V. A Celebrated Poem of Taliesin, translated into Sapphic verse. The Whole selected from original MSS. and other authentic records'; the appended 'Memoirs of Edward Llwyd' being 'transcribed from a manuscript in the [Ashmolean] Museum, Oxford' (title page). BMC, volume 19, pages 116-17, columns 576-77. Bound in 3/4 brown calf over green/brown marbled boards, plain endpapers, all edges trimmed. Still a fairly tight copy internally, despite external appearances. Owen (1752-1811), Welsh antiquary, graduate of Jesus College, Oxford (M. A., 1776); rector of Llandyfrydog and Meyllteryn. Llwyd (Lloyd, or Lhwyd; 1658-1708), Welsh antiquary, philosopher and natural historian, noted for the 'Archaeologia Britannica' and other works.
