1 page (1 leaf; recto only). Letter in reply to unidentified correspondent's questionnaire: 'Dear Sir: I thank you for your letter of the 5th April and will try to reply to your questions. 'Gedichte' (1903) was not my first published work. My first work in your sense to be published was: 'ROMANTISCHE LIEDER'. It was published 1898 by 'E. Pierson's Verlag, Dresden und Leipzig' ... I could not decipher all your questions, perhaps I misunderstood one ... Yours sincerily [sic] [signature] H Hesse'. With additional relevant material present (including reproduced portrait photograph, plus typed and Xeroxed copies and transcriptions. Fold to midsection (to form oblong small 4to); slight browning to edges; else a fine specimen from the post-Nobel Prize period. Hesse (1877-1962), German-born and Swiss adopted novelist and poet, noted for the primarily psychological novels ('Demian', 1919; 'Steppenwolf', 1927; etc); awarded the Goethe Prize and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1946.
