ix, [1], 365 pages. Notable for the included intimate correspondence between the author and his subject; also for the upper jacket cover color photographic portrait of Bergman by Cecil Beaton. Presentation copy, signed (in full) and inscribed by Steele in blue ink on front free endpaper to Los Angeles Times film critic Philip Scheuer and his wife, Beverly Hills, CA, June 18, 1959. Few small nicks, slight soiling, rubbing and browning to jacket; slight internal browning to edges and endpapers. Philip Scheuer (1902-1985) came to Hollywood to make movies and wound up its leading critic for many years. Scheuer preceded Charles Champlin as the LA Times' movie critic and editor, and had an unusually long 55-year career at the paper (1927-1967 full time, and as a post-retirement contributor through 1982). His importance in Hollywood and the level of his many friendships should not be underestimated.
