6 1/2 x 4 1/4 ' on heavy stock. 3/4 length full-face pose in velvet jacket (unidentified pose/role) by Thrupp, signed and inscribed in black ink ('Yours Truly Ellen Terry' and 'On Tour 1880') on recto; also inscribed ('Willie Baker from E.T.') on verso. Slight rubbing and browning to card (unaffecting image); else a very desirable portrait study and inscription. Terry (1848-1928), English actress, sister of actor Fred Terry and mother of Edith and Edward Gordon Craig; first appearance on stage at the age of 8 (in 'The Winter's Tale'); known as the principal Shakespearean actress of her time, partnered chiefly with Sir Henry Irving (between 1878 and 1902) and also noted for her relations with Sir James Barrie and George Bernard Shaw; entered theatrical management in 1903; married to artist G.F.
