SECOND EDITION of this important 16th-century work on royal powers under English law by a leading jurist. A Very Good copy, bound in period full brown polished calf, covers tooled in blind, rebacked in period-style calf with raised bands and red leather label (boards rubbed; some minor stains to text with some wear to text margins). Text Latin and English, the latter partly in black letter. Sir William Stanford [also Stannforde, Stamford or Staunford], (1509 – 1558), important English jurist and pioneering author of legal texts, including in 1557 'Les Plees del Coron', the first textbook on English criminal law. 'An Exposicion of the Kinges Prerogative', an important exploration of royal powers was first issued posthumously in 1567, with the title being changed in this [SECOND?] 1573 edition to 'An Exposition of the Kinges Prerogatiue'. Written during Queen Mary's reign, and published during that of Elizabeth I, this work explored questions of great interest and importance to legal practitioners and jurists of the era. 85,[4] leaves.
