The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments : Translated Out of the Original Tongues, and With the Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised

Charles Bill and the executrix of Thomas Newcomb deceas'd, 1697. First Thus. Leather Binding. Very Good. Item #620574

The Sylvester-Anstice family Bible. A very good copy of this late 17th-century pocket-sized King James Bible is bound in unrestored full brown period calf, spine with raised bands and hand-lettered paper label (reading 'Bible [illegible] family Register'), covers elaborately panelled in blind with series of eight rules sourrounding a repeating floral pattern with floral devices at corners (binding quite rubbed but intact; the blank lower margin of the last leaf of the Old Testament has been torn away; there is browning, spotting and wear throughout with a few tears and holes). PROVENANCE: The Sylvester-Antice family Bible, with family history beginning with the inserted baptimal record for Rebecka Sylvester in 1719 pinned to front endpaper, with an ink inscription by William Sylvester on the Old Testament title page verso in 1727 (inked-out), through the marriage of Mary Sylvester to Josiah Anstice in 1750 the Bible moves to the Anstice line, where it stays at least until 1849. There are six pages of genealogical records and family history. The full-page inscription on the verso of the New Testament title page (partly inked-over) is in a hand illegible to us.
