Printed for Robert Faulder, 1805. First Thus. Leather Binding. Very Good. Item #615659

A fine-bound unique extra-illustrated copy dating from ca. 1810. This fascinating early extra-illustrated copy, was assembled and bound ca. 1810, based on the style of the binding and the dates of the additional prints, which range from 1630 to 1807. This copy, complete with its original engraved title page and 16 maps and plates (three folding), has been extended by the insertion of 141 plates, mounted or bound in, 6 of which are hand-colored (totaling 157 plates plus engraved title). The additional prints include views of the city and of landmark buildings, and a wide range of portraits of notable figures whose lives were set in or touched London's rich history. Included amonog them is James Granger, namesake of 'Grangerisation', or the art of extra-illustration. The book is bound in period full black straight-grained morocco, spine with raised bands and elaborate gilt floral tooling, the covers are bordered in bliind with a wide repeating scroll and gilt clover (?) motifs at corners, surrounding a center panel of twin gilt fillets with elaborate foral designs at corners, encasing a scroll of repeating flower and leaf designs with blind floral designs at corners, elaborate gilt inner dentelles formed of a repeating floral border in gilt, silk moire endpapers bordered with twin gilt rules and gilt floral designs at corners, all edges gilt (expertly rebacked preserving virtually the entirety of original spine; evidence of prior wear to boards; some foxing to text; folding map and 2 folding plates have some browning, creasing and marginal nicks and wear; there is some foxing to text). Still a very attractive, unique copy. The additional prints range in date as early as 1630 to 1807 at the latest. Among the notable prints are 'Illustrissima et excellentissima domina dna: Alathea Talbot' by Wenceslaus Hollar after Anthony van Dyck, 1646 (which has been trimmed at edges); Hollar's 'Hono . Franciscus Bacon Baro de Verulam , Vice Count S. Albani mortuus 9 Aprilis A. 1626', 1676; and 'Gustavus Adolphus, King of Sweden' by Thomas Cecill, 1630. Most of the prints are engravings, with a few mezzotints.
