Insel Verlag, 1911. First Thus. Leather. Used - Very Good. Item #607015

A unique copy in a full onlaid vellum exhibition binding from the period, spine with onlaid hand-lettered label, upper cover with hand-lettered label and elaborate 2.75 x 2.75 inch onlay in four colors of leather, depicting an oared ship under sail (on a wine-dark sea), all edges gilt (some darkening and wear to vellum, boards a bit warped, some bumping to gilt edges; front inner hinge tender). PROVENANCE: From the collection of Suse Cassirer (Suzanne Aimée) Cassirer, born circa 1894, daughter of the influential Berlin art dealer/publisher Paul Cassirer, with an inserted leaf at front on a thin, near-transparent Japanese paper bearing what may be be described as her pictorial bookplate (though printed on a full-page sheet), in what appears to be a wood-engraving. Suse Cassirer sat for a portrait by Munch. There are two pencil inscriptions at front that are likely in Suse's hand.
