J. B. Lippincott Company, 1904. Leather. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. / No Jacket. Item #005514653
An oustanding and attractive set in 22 volumes, complete as issued, which also includes an autograph letter with significant content by William H. Prescott. Bound in period 3/4 blue morocco over marbled boards, spines with raised bands and elaborate Art Nouveau tulip motifs in gilt, covers bordered with twin gilt fillets, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers (three spines feature gouges, and several have heavy rubbing to corners, edges, or fore-edges). Still a very atrtactive set. The 4-page autograph letter by Prescott (inserted in volume 1), is dated March 4, is addressed to 'My Dear Cogswell,' prominent American librarian and scholar Joseph Green Cogswell. In it, Prescott extends his warmest thanks for assistance on his current work, mentions the return of material borrowed, and refers to Cogswell's offer to have copies made of material relating to Charles VII and Louis XI. He mentions both the Atheneum and Astor Library, closing with 'dear Cogswell' again. The letter has a professional mend. A warm working letter to a close associate offers insight into Prescott's work and relationships. Last volume is 'The Life of Prescott' by George Ticknor. There are pictorial bookplates in each volume, though oddly they bear no name.Hand-colored Frontispieces in Each Volume, b/w Plates.
