Seattle Hardware Co. Importers and Jobbers of Hardware Volume I [Catalog 1]

Seattle Hardware Company, 1900. First Edition. Leather Binding. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" Tall. Good / No Jacket. Item #005505956

Exceptionally rare copy of the first of Seattle Hardware's mammoth catalogs. Bound in publisher's heavy 3/4 brown leather over brown cloth, spine with raied bands and gilt titling, beveled boards, marbled endpapers, cloth tabs on index (heavy wear from extensive use over many years; tears to front outer hinge). The text is intact aside from some marginal tears. There are maginal smudges to many leaves. Given the provenance, this may be the publisher's deluxe binding, but as no other surviving copies are recorded, that may prove impossible to confirm. The prior owner has created a crude if functional slipcase. lvii,[1],1086 pages. The 1900 date supplied from article in HARDWARE DEALERS MAGAZINE, April 1, 1900. PROVENANCE: Has cover label and ink stamps of Agnew Hardware of Everett (apparently a sub-agent of Seattle Hardware). This copy was used by Rucker Bros. Mercantile of Hartford Junction, Washington (now part of the city Lake Stevens). The Rucker Brothers ( Wyatt J. and Bethel J.) and their various operations played significant toles in the Pacific Northwest in this era, in Everett, Snohomish County, Lake Stevens, etc. In 1900, the date of issue of this enormous catalog, the Ruckers were key players in the resurgence of Everett after the crash brought about the Great Northern Railway's decision to end its line in Seattle instead of Everett.B/w Illustrations.
