First edition in the scarce deluxe publisher's binding of green morocco decorated in gilt and blind: spine elaborately tooled in gilt with the goddess Diana at foot, with her quiver of arrows, bow, and dog, surmounted by birds, a taget incorporating the title, and crowing cock above; the covers feature three bowmen in armor, two on foot and one mounted, sorrounded by floral scrolling in blind, all edges gilt. Rebacked with matching calf, original spine laid down; some rubbing to edges and corners; some browning and darkening to leather; some traces of foxing and light marginal dampstaining to text). Complete with all 39 engraved plates. PROVENANCE: Engraved armorial bookplate of John Edge (with "Semper Fidelis" motto); bookplate of madcap sportsman Joshua Crane, Jr. (featuring tennis raquet and polo mallet). Crane was the court tennis champion of the United States, a polo enthusiast, inventor of auto polo (played insanely from cars), and an early aviator.
