A beautifully bound, extra-illustrated copy. Fine bound by Bayntun & Son (for Buckland of Knightsbridge) in full crushed navy blue morocco, spine with gilt tooled raised bands and gilt-rulled compartments bordered with twin rules, covers bordered in gilt with twiin rules, board edges with twin gilt rules, elaborately decorated gilt inner dentelles, featuring an interlocking gilt floral border surrounding 5 varying decorative gilt rules, top edge gilt, other edges uncut (light rubbing, wear to front hinge at top; some scattered foxing to the extra plates). Original cvers bound in at rear. Copy #46 of 200 numbered copies on Marais paper. This limited edition was issued with 13 plates, each present in two states (all are present). This unique copy is extra-illlustrated with the insertion of 34 additional plates, mainly engraved and most 19th century, of which 3 are hand-colored. This edition includes an extended preface by Voltaire. Marthe-Marguerite Le Valois de Villette de Mursay, Marquise de Caylus (1673-1729) French noblewoman and author. Her memoirs, first issued in 1770, were edited by Voltaire, and are an entertaining and information first-hand account of Louis XIV and his court. Description:Illustrated by Lionel Peraux.
