This work, issued at the outbreak of the first English Civil War (of the three successive conflicts), followed Spelman's knighthood at the hand of the King, the year before his death from camp fever. A scarce volley in the struggle between King Charles I and Parliament during England's Civil War. Sir John Spelman, son of antiquary Henry Spelman, was a prominent supporter of the Royalist cause (in contrast to his father's support of constitutional principles.
