Collection of 7 Zinc Plates from an Unpublished Work on Leicestershire Quarries

Rigby Graham, 1990. Unknown. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Near Fine / No Jacket. Item #00535787

These seven Rigby Graham blocks were part of an intended book on Leicestershire Quarries that the artist seems to have begun about 1981, and later for some unknown reason abandoned after taking the work all the way to production blocks. These blocks were given by Graham to his friends, American letterpress printers Elspeth Pope and Jim Holly, who printed a number of them as cards over the years (seven issued irregularly 1991-2000). The gift of blocks was larger, and may have included other work, but the Quarry series is known to have been larger than what is present. The blocks are zinc photo-engravings mounted type-high on wood. Six of the finished cards are present (several in multiple copies). The blocks are in excellent condition, ready to print. Rigby Graham (1931-2015), English landscape artist in the English Romanticism tradition, illustrated some 250 books in his lifetime, many for fine and small presses.
