A stunning copy of the first edition to include all of the Holbein sketches - a great edition of Erasmus' classic "In Praise of Folly". The text is in superb condition, with no markings. Attractively bound in full late 18th-century tree calf, spine with red morocco label and elaborate gilt tooling, covers bordered in gilt, edges stained yellow, marbled endpapers (some rubbing to joints, spine tips, and edges). An abundantly illustrated work of woodcuts, from drawings by Holbein (the Younger). Most are unsigned, or signed: "Heitz". (Heinrich Heitz, ca 1750 - ca 1835). Some are signed: "U.j.", one is signed: "D.". According to the National Union Catalog, it is the only edition featuring all the drawings made by Holbein for this work.
