Only two other copies of this exceptionally rare work are known to survive. It includes some of the earliest rules of the "The Football Association" and refers to Rugby football. It also includes early writings on angling, swimming, ice skating, and cricket (including rules). Bound in the original green cloth stamped in black (some wear and fraying to cloth; text needs resewing and recasing; pencil inscriptions of prior owners at front). The 1863 date is approximate - the publisher's ads at rear list the 3rd edition of Oppen's "Postage stamp album and catalogue" by Henry Whymper (the 6th edition of that work was published in 1864). This book was advertised as available in "The Athenaeum" and other journals in 1866. Sections are: Etiquette for gentlemen How to swim How to angle How to play cricket and football. Each section has half title, table of contents and separate pagination.
